A RUSSIAN ICON OF THE ELEVATION OF THE CROSS, 19TH CENTURY. The VSEMIRNOE VOZDVIZHENIE CHESTNAGO I ZHIVOTVORY ASHCHAGO KRESTA (The Universal Elevation of the Honorable and Life-giving Cross) is based on a ceremony that is believed to have originated in Jerusalem after the dedication of the Basilica of the Resurrection, built by the Emperor Constantine, whose Edict of Milan legalized Christianity in the Roman Empire. Tradition relates that Constantine's mother Helena discovered the true cross of Christ. Bishop Makarius had pointed out to her the site where the Holy Sepulchre was said to be, and there she found three crosses, one of which was recognized as the cross of Christ after a dying man was healed by it. This type depicts the cross being raised up before the people by the Bishop of Jerusalem Makarius, the Empress Helena and the Emperor Constantine look on with a crowd gathered below. 14 inches x 12.25 inches (35.5 x 31 cm).
