Lot 526
AN INTERESTING ICON OF THE MOTHER OF GOD WITH SAINTS, SOUTHWEST RUSSIA, CIRCA 1800. At center the enthroned Mother of God with the infant Christ upon her lap. On the left a full length image of Saint George holding a spear and palm frond and on the right the Prophetess Anna holding a blooming stem. Both images are identified by the Slavonic inscriptions above their heads. The upper corners displaying highly ornate Baroque-style cartouches upon which is inscribed the standard Greek abbreviated title MP OY –Meter Theou – Mother of God. The composition of the seated Virgin in the offered lot would seem to relate to the well venerated icon held in the famous Monastery of the Caves, Kiev, Ukraine under the title Svyenskaya-Pecherskaya Mother of God and which is regarded as the savior of the town of Bryansk from Napoleon’s troops in 1812. Further still the unique pallet with an emphasis on red, the overwhelming Baroque influence, the panel and strut construction (thin), would suggest that the offered lot is Ukrainian in origin and possibly from the Pecherska Lavra workshop. The icon is overlaid with a heavy, silvered metal and repousse riza with chasing and what appears to be spurious and later Moscow hallmarks. 15 inches x 10.75 inches (38.5cm x 27.5cm).
Estimate:  $600 - 900   € 450 - 675
