A RUSSIAN ICON OF SAINTS FLORUS AND LAURUS, 19TH CENTURY. Flor and Lavr were twins, stonemasons working on a pagan temple. They turned the temple over to the Christians and were drowned as punishment by the Emperor Licinius. The two are the patron saints of horsekeepers. In the standard icon type, the Archangel stands on a hill in the center, Florus stands to the Angel's right, and Laurus on the Angel's left. Below are three riders chasing a herd of horses. Their names are Spevsipp, Elevsipp, and Melevsipp (originally Speusippus, Eleusippus and Meleusipps, meaning 'Horsebreaker' 'Horse-scout' and 'Black horse'). They are said to have been converts from paganism martyred in the 2nd century. The borders overlaid with a silvered repoussed metal basma style frame. 12.25 inches x 10.25 inches (31 x 26 cm).
