Provenance: The collection of Mr. Laurence J. Kipp, Minneapolis, Minnesota. In 1954, Laurence Kipp was appointed librarian of the Baker Library of the Harvard University Graduate School of Business Administration. Mr. Kipp was active in professional library development on the state, national and international level, as well as his wife Rae, who was also later Chairman of the Board of Education for the state of Massachusetts. In January 1961, Larry Kipp and his wife Rae Kipp traveled to India for eight months. In August 1961, at the end of their visit, they submitted a report to the Indian and American librarians, which offered an assessment of the Indian univeristy libraries and librarians. During their stay in India, the Kipp's undertook to evaluate the Wheat Loan Program as it involved books, libraries and librarians. They also officiated as Directors under the auspices of the Ministry of Education (Government of India), the University Grants commission and the Wheat Loan office. The offered lot was given to Mr. and Mrs. Kipp directly as a gift by a member of the Roy family whom the Kipp's had befriended when he was a student in Boston. The Kipp's early foray into the far East blossomed into a lifelong love of India and the Orient to which they traveled frequently, continually acquiring objects for their collection.
