A VERY FINE POLYCHROME GILT AND CARVED RELIEF WOOD FIGURAL GROUPING OF THE MADONNA AND CHILD, FRANZ DREXLER (1857-1913). Set within a carved integral arched form reserve, bordered in ribbon tied roses. At center, a finely and realistically carved figure of the Madonna and Child. The infant Christ delivers a blessing and holds an orb with cross finial. The Virgin's head encircled with a large gilt halo set with stars. Carved  below in Latin 'Causa Nostrae Laetitiae' (The Cause of Our Joy). Inscribed lower right 'F. Drexler Munchen'. Height 40.25 inches (102 cm), width 29.5 inches (75 cm).
