A LARGE AND IMPOSING NORTHERN ITALIAN CARVED POLYCHROME AND GILT WOOD RELIEF PLAQUE OF THE ANNUNCIATION, 17TH CENTURY. Carved in high relief, the figures finely modeled with good proportions, cascading hair, deep folds and feathering, the Archangel Gabriel at left appears before the Virgin seated at right, studying an open book of scripture and at top, the Holy Spirit depicted as a dove descends upon her. The plaque carved from a single piece of wood and set into a classical carved frame with columns and overhanging element, and on the lower margin a gilt inscription IESUS CONCEPTUS. Overall height 32.5 inches (83 cm), width 28.75 inches (73 cm).
