A VERY FINE LIMOGES ENAMEL TRIPTYCH OF THE LAST JUDGMENT, MANNER OF JEAN I PENICAUD (1490-1543). A large and impressive triptych comprising three separate panels. At center Christ is seated in judgment against a deep blue gilded sky, his feet rest on a globe. His full length cloak secured below the neck and edged in jewels. His head enclosed in a gilded and jeweled halo and flanked by a large white lily and sword. Two descending angles blowing trumpets are on either side and on the left the Mother God kneels before Christ interceding on behalf of mankind and on the right John the Baptist also kneels wearing an animal skin tunic and both figures clothed in gilt and jeweled edged cloaks and with similar haloes. In the lower margin, two angels blow trumpets calling all to judgment; and the earth gives up its dead (Revelation 20:13). On the left wing St. Peter, with key in hand, unlocks the door to admit the righteous, depicted as children, into Paradise represented as different rooms symbolizing the “many mansions” of John 14:2. On the right wing the wicked, driven by demons, enter the Jaws of Hell. The panels contained in an impressive carved, gessoed and gilt, hinged triptych frame, the verso of doors painted with a coat of arms and on the verso of central section, a suspension loop. The center enameled panel 8.6 inches x 7.6 inches (22 x 19.5 cm) and each enameled wing panel 8.6 inches x 3.25 inches (22 x 8.5 cm), Overall dimensions including frame 16.6 inches x 20.5 inches (42.3 x 52 cm).
