A LARGE AND IMPOSING CARVED WOOD FIGURE OF CHRIST IN AGONY, 1927, FRANZ XAVER WIRTH (Austrian 1907-1992). Carved in three-quarters round with hollow back. On an integral shaped base with cascading hair and dramatic anatomical features. Signed on verso 'Wirth 1927' and 'Hallstatt'. Height 27.75 inches (69.25 cm).

Wirth studied at the School of Applied Arts in Vienna (later the Academy of Fine Arts) and was a student of the famous sculptor Prof. Anton Hanak (1875-1934).
