A VERY FINE RUSSIAN ICON OF CHRIST, OVCHINNIKOV, MOSCOW CIRCA 1890. A finely painted image of Christ delivering a blessing and holding an open book of Gospels to John 13:34- “A New Commandment I give Unto Thee that Ye also Love one another.” Overlaid with an exquisite multi-piece silver-gilt and cloisonné enamel oklad with seed pearl riza and decorative elements on halo and with integral suspension loop at top. Hallmarked Moscow, c 1890 and Cyrillic makers mark of OVCHINNIKOV beneath the Imperial warrant, backed in velvet and with engraved silver dedicatory plaque inscribed, “God bless you! June 1902 from Serge”. Based on the Gospel text it is fair to assume the offered lot was a wedding present. 3.8 inches x 3.25 inches (9.5 x 8.5 cm).
