A FINE RUSSIAN ICON OF THE OLD TESTAMENT TRINITY, MSTERA, 1888. A skillfully painted image depicting the three angels who appeared to the Patriarch Abraham at the Oak of Momre, as recorded in chapter 18 of the book of Genesis. At lower left, Abraham serves his guests and behind him is his wife, Sara, at lower center, a servant slays a calf. The ground and hills highly stylized and the sky interestingly gradated in shades of dark red, white and green; the lower margin inscribed "This holy icon was painted in the year from the Creation of the World, 7396 = 1888". Size 14 inches x 12.1 inches (35.5 x 30.7 cm).
