Lot 478
AN INTERESTING RUSSIAN ICON OF ST. JOHN THE FORERUNNER, CIRCA 1800. A finely painted half-length image, St. John holds a diskos containing the nude infant Christ symbolizing the Lamb of God of the Eucharist, and holds a scroll in the same hand inscribed with the words taken from John 1:29 "Behold the lamb of God, which takes away the sins of the world". John wears a hair shirt (Vlasyanitsa) and is depicted with wings which derive from the double meaning of the Greek word used to describe him in Mark 1:2 "Angelos", which means both "messenger" and "angel". The red inscription in the upper margin identifies him as the Holy John the Forerunner. 11.6 inches x 9.5 inches (29.5 x 24.2 cm).
