A RUSSIAN ICON OF SAINTS PETER AND PAUL, STROGANOV SCHOOL STYLE, 19TH CENTURY, POSTNIKOV COLLECTION. On the left St. Peter holds the keys to the Kingdom and on the right Paul holds a book of Gospels. At top center Christ Emmanuel. 12.25 inches x 10.5 inches (31 x 26.4 cm).

Provenance:
Former collection of Nikolai Mikhailovich Postnikov (1827-1897). Postnikov was a well to-do Moscow merchant and iconophile. He collected all manner of Christian related relics and in particular icons from the Stroganov School as well as having Stroganov style icons commissioned by top iconographers of the day. In 1888 he published the Catalogue of Christian Relics, Collected by N.M. Postnikov and orchestrated numerous exhibitions of his collection. The offered icon, according to the label on verso, must certainly have been one of those icons. In addition to Postnikov’s collection label, the offered icon also exhibits a museum exhibition label.
