A LARGE AND IMPORTANT RUSSIAN ICON OF ST. GEORGE, PALEKH CIRCA 1800.  At center St. George, depicted as a mounted soldier, thrusts his lance into the head of the dragon beneath him. At mid left the kings daughter, Elisaba, has fasten her sash about the neck of the dragon so that, now subdued, it can be led through the town for conversion of the people before it is killed. At upper right the King, Queen and their court look on from the battlements. In the upper left corner Christ sends an angel with a martyrs crown which George would earn as illustrated on the lower margin in four registers which depict his martyrdom each with corresponding narrative inscriptions. The left border painted with the guardian angel and the Holy Equal-to-the Apostles, Price Vladimir and the right border with the Holy Fool Andrei (top) and the Bishop Saint Theodotus. The upper margin with highly stylized and condensed inscription identifying the subject as, “The Image of the Holy Great Martyr George the Victorious”. Stunning! 42 inches x 31 inches (106.7 x 78.7 cm).
