A FINE CHINESE CARVED RHINOCEROS HORN LIBATION CUP, QING DYNASTY. Finely carved and polished, of deeply flaring side with five figures among hanging double gourds, fungus, and foliage on a rockery ground with a reticulated scrolling vine and double gourd rim continuing to the interior center, in a rich deep amber colored horn. Height 4 inches (10 cm), length 6.25 inches (16 cm).

Provenance:

Mr. Paul Francis Smith (1901-1985), Kenosha, Wisconsin, thence by decent upon his death to the present owner, his grandson, Mr. baron James Spence Bishop III, Charlotte, North Carolina.

According to the consignor, Mr. Smith, former President & CEO of L.C. Thomsen’s Stainless Steel Manufacturing, Kenosha, Wisconsin, traveled to the Orient in the post wars years where and when it is believe the offered lot was acquired.
