A FINE AND IMPORTANT RUSSIAN ICON OF SAINT GEORGE, NOVGOROD SCHOOL, 15TH CENTURY.  Here George, in full military attire, rides atop a robust white horse his red cape flowing as he plunges his long lance into the winged dragons open mouth beneath him while Christ delivers a blessing from upper right. White highlighting and traces of gilding to background and borders. A classic Novgorod icon. 11 inches x 8.5 inches (28 cm x 21.5 cm).

The offered lot follows very closely the fine example of Saint George Slaying the Dragon in the collection of the Russian Museum, St. Petersburg, (Cat. 2123) attributed to the Novgorod school and dated to the early 15th century. For another comparison, see the icon of the same subject housed in the Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow, Russia dated to the first half of the 15th century, as well as the example in the Museum of Russian Icons, Clinton, Massachusetts dated to circa 1500.
