A FINE RUSSIAN ICON OF THE DESCENT INTO HADES, 15TH CENTURY. Here, Christ at center stands atop the broken gates of Hades with locks, bolts and hinges scattered below. Jesus grasps the hand of Adam (left) as Eve kneels at His feet (right) while other righteous patriarchs and prophets (among them Kings Solomon and David, as well as Daniel and Moses) walk forth from bondage. The upper margin inscribed in Old Church Slavonic, Voskresenie Khristovo – The Resurrection of Christ. 9 inches x 7.25 inches (23 cm x 18.5 cm).
