A RARE RUSSIAN ICON OF YOU ARE A PRIEST FOREVER AFTER THE ORDER OF MELCHIZEDEK, 16TH CENTURY, PROBABLY NOVGOROD. This subject is closely related to another didactic icon type called the Crucified Seraph which meant to illustrate that the crucifixion was preordained. On this example, at center, God the Father is depicted in the attire of a bishop, delivering a blessing and holding a sword. In front, on either side, are angels adoring the infant Christ shown within a mandorla supported by red Seraphs and above them both is a dove symbolizing the Holy Spirit. Behind God the Father can be seen the outstretched arms and feet of the crucified Christ. At top center, the star decorated half sphere representing the heavens and below at center the skull of Adam signifying Golgotha. At upper left is the sun which has darkened and the moon which has become as blood (Joel 2:31, Acts 2:20) and in the outer corners of the red four-pointed star are the symbols of the Evangelists. Much of the imagery is taken from the book of Hebrews, “For the word of God is living, and powerful, and sharper than any two edge sword.” (4:12) as well as “You are a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.” (5:6). The appearance of mystic didactic icons in the 16th century were viewed as both confusing and controversial especially since many were seen as being the product of western (primarily Catholic) religious art which was thought by some officials as being heretical. Nevertheless, these types of icons were popular, and despite efforts to ban them, they continued to be produced. A rarely encountered subject. 9.2 inches x 7.25 inches (23.1 cm x 18.5 cm).
