A RUSSIAN ICON OF ST. JOHN THE FORERUNNER IN THE WILDERNESS, 16TH CENTURY, MOSCOW. Here John is shown in the desert wearing a hair shirt (vlasyanitsa) and delivering a blessing with his right hand configured in the manner favored by the Old believers. In his left hand he holds a scroll upon which is inscribed the words from Matthew 3:2 - “Repent ye: for the Kingdom of God is at hand.” In the lower left corner is a salver containing his head and in the upper left corner the blessing hand of Christ is seen. 10.25 inches x 8 inches (26 cm x 20.5 cm).
