Johan Victor Aarne (1863-1934) was a master goldsmith noted for his exceptional gold and enamel frames. He worked for Faberge during two periods, first from 1880-1890 in August Holmstrom’s workshop, and later under his own direction, he worked exclusively for Faberge from 1891 until 1904 when he sold his workshop to Hjalmar Armfeldt, a workmaster under Anders Nevalainen. He then settled in Vyborg, Findland, where he operated a goldsmithing workshop for another 30 years. The exceptional quality of Aarne’s work was highly esteemed by Faberge. Agathon Faberge’s son is reported to have said to Hjalmar Armfeldt as he prepared to take over Aarne’s workshop: “There is a great difference between Aarne and Nevalainen. We have become accustomed to having a high opinion of Aarne’s firm. Can you guarantee that we shall be able to go on having such a high opinion of it.”
