Icons such as the offered lot exhibiting the distinctive pallet of blue, red and white together with extensive gilt highlighting is often referred to as the St. Petersburg style as similar icons often display inscriptions denoting their St. Petersburg origins. They are often of high quality, like the offered lot, and seemed to have been quite popular with a certain segment of the western thinking aristocratic community at the time. The dark borders and extensive use of blue and red hues together with the wide use of gold highlighting and naturally shaded fleshy features are all aspects of what Tarasov calls the 'Lively transference into Orthodox iconic space of Western Catholic and Protestant imagery. See: Oleg Tarasov, Icon and Devotion, Reaktion Books Ltd, London, 2002, chapter four for a treatment on this topic.
