A RUSSIAN ICON OF THE RESURRECTION AND DESCENT, CIRCA 1800, PROBABLY PALEKH. In this complex rendering, both the western depiction of Easter, the resurrected Christ standing above his empty tomb (top) and the traditional Eastern depiction of Easter is displayed as Christ Descends into Hades (below) to set forth from bondage the righteous men and women of the Old Covenant. Finely painted with characteristic Palekh details and pallet. 13.5 inches x 11 inches (34.5 x 28.2 cm).
