A RUSSIAN ICON OF THE FIERY ASCENSION OF THE PROPHET ELIJAH, PALEKH, CIRCA 1850. Finely painted on a gilt ground, at center, the Old Testament Prophet Elijah sits within a cave in the wilderness and is surrounded by various scenes from his life including dividing the Jordan River with his mantle (upper left), and being fed in the wilderness by an angel (lower left). At top, Elijah ascends to heaven in a fiery Chariot as described in 2 Kings, dropping his mantle to his successor Elisha at mid right. The upper margin inscribed OBRAZ OGNENNOE VOSKHOZDENIE PROROKA ILIY – The Image of the Fiery Ascension of the Prophet Elijah. A very fine icon. 12.25 inches x 10.5 inches (31.1 x 26.6 cm).
