A VERY FINE GERMAN CARVED IVORY AND STERLING-GILT MOUNTED TANKARD, "RAPE OF THE SABINE WOMEN", LATE 19TH CENTURY.Probably Hanau, the ivory carved in high relief in the round with a Roman battle scene depicting fully armored Roman soldiers, mounted horsemen and semi nude females with a fully carved figural handle of a Roman soldier with shield raised in defense, mounted on a silver-gilt base with repousse cherub masks, fruit clusters and interlocking C scrolls, surmounted with a matching shaped and repousse hinged cover terminating with a carved figural ivory finial of an infant warrior playing a flute. The lid interior stamped "sterling" with unidentified conjoined "SA" maker's mark. Height 10 inches (25.5 cm).
