A LARGE AND IMPRESSIVE CARVED IVORY BATTLE SCENE LIDDED TANKARD "LION HUNT," PROBABLY GERMAN, 3RD QUARTER 19TH CENTURY.In the manner of the painting by Peter-Paul Ruebens, fully carved in the round in deep relief and great detail with a scene of horse mounted knights and natives battling attacking lions raised on a scalloped carved foot rim with oval cartouches and scrolled acanthus below a fully carved ivory handle representing the mythical figure "Dagon" and surmounted with a carved ivory and ivory hinged lid with a figural lion finial. Height 10.75 inches (27.5 cm).
