A CARVED IVORY CORPUS, FLEMISH 18TH CENTURY. Carved in full round with flowing hair, good anatomy and detail. Finely carved rope draped perizonium and with open mouth revealing separately carved tongue and teeth. Mounted on a later ebony cross with trefoil terminals and set in an octagonal base with open Gothic arches revealing a snake wrapped around a tree trunk, a symbol of Christ's victory over death. The base with additional carved relief images depicting instruments of the passion displayed in six reserves equally spaced around the base. Height of carved ivory corpus 9.6 inches (24.5 cm). Overall height including ebony cross 28 inches (71.1 cm).
