Lot 173
A RUSSIAN ICON OF SAINT SERGIUS OF RADONEZH AND LIFE SCENES, 17TH CENTURY WITH LATER RESTORATIONS. A large and imposing icon depicting the revered 14th century saint rendered full length at center and surrounded by 20 scenes from his life. Directly above his head an image of the Old Testament Trinity, the name he would choose for the monastery he founded, the Trinity Lavra, north-east of Moscow.  The border scenes are meant to be read top to bottom left to right. They begin with the birth of the saint and follow through depicting various events at different stages of his life, concluding lower right with an image of Saints Sergius and Nikon (his disciple) appearing in a vision to the bed ridden Semion Antonov who is touched by an icon of the Mother of God held by Sergius and is subsequently healed.  It would seem that the offered icon was at one time adorned with decorative silver covering (basma) which has been lost to the ages. Despite its imperfect state of preservation, the offered icon offers insight into the continual development of the cult of Sergius Radonezh into the 17th century. 21 inches x 17.25 inches (53.2 x 44 cm).
Estimate:  $10,000 - 15,000   € 7,700 - 11,550
