A FINE RUSSIAN ICON OF THE SMOLNESK HODIGITRIA MOTHER OF GOD, CIRCA 1500.  Here the Virgin’s head is tilted slightly downward as she cradles her infant son in her left arm while with her right hand gestures (shows the way-Hodigitria) towards humankinds source of salvation. The infant Christ holds a scroll as a symbol of his wisdom and with his right hand he delivers a blessing. The maphorion of the Virgin in burgundy with red edging and her veil rendered in shades of blue. The panel with single spline (shponki) inset on verso. A fine personal devotional icon.  9 inches x 7.25 inches (23 x 18.5 cm).
