Lot 182
A RUSSIAN ICON OF THE EVANGELIST SAINT MATTHEW, 17TH CENTURY.  Here Matthew is depicted sitting in an interior writing his gospel, the first in the New Testament. The scroll upon which he writes, of which there are traces, would have begun, "The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David…" At top center is his symbol, a winged man. Icons such as the offered lot often adorned, together with images of the three other Evangelists, the Royal Doors of an iconostasis. Judging by the size of this example, likely a fairly good size, perhaps a Northern church.  21.5 inches x 12.75 inches (54.5 x 32.5 cm).
Estimate:  $3,000 - 5,000   € 2,310 - 3,850
unsold
