A RUSSIAN ICON OF SAINT JOHN THE FORERUNNER, CIRCA 1800, WITH PALEKH INFLUENCES. At center a full length image of St. John displaying wings and holding a diskos containing the infant Christ symbolizing the Lamb of God of the Eucharist. He also holds a scroll upon which is inscribed words taken from the Gospel of John the Evangelist, "Behold the Lamb of God, which takes away the sins of the world." In the lower left corner is depicted his birth and at lower right his beheading. The wings derive from the double meaning of the Greek word used to describe him in Mark 1:2 – angelos, meaning both messenger and angel. The upper left margin with a family saint. 12.25 inches x 10.25 inches (31 x 26 cm).
