The offered icon reflects the taste of affluent Russians for items executed in the Italianate taste. At the beginning of the 19th century, when foreign travel became more accessible to the aristocracy, those who could, journeyed to Europe and in particular, Italy where they were mesmerized by the art and architecture. The addition of a later more elaborate enameled halo reveals the practice of continually embellishing or improving an icon that has been handed down through the family, often as an ex-voto offering for an answered prayer.
