A VERY FINE RUSSIAN ICON OF SAINT NICHOLAS, MOSCOW, CIRCA 1890, NIKOLAI ALEKSEEV. Finely painted following the traditional "old" style. Here Nicholas is depicted in the standard manner in the apparel of a Bishop, he delivers a blessing with his right hand and holds and open book of Gospels in his left hand. The Gospels are open to reveal a variant of the text based on Luke 6:17: "VO VREMA ONO STA IISUS NA MYESTYE RAVNYE…" – the beatitudes. At upper left Christ presents a book of Gospels to Nicholas and at upper right the Virgin presents him with an omophorion (bishops stole). The left borders painted with two repeating images of the Guardian Angel. The right border painted with the Holy Venerable Avksentiy (above) and the Holy Venerable Maria of Egypt (below). The entire icon overlaid with an exceptionally crafted silver-gilt repousse and chased riza. The halo and corners in cloisonné enamel, the title and gospel text in champlevé enamel. Hallmarked Moscow, circa 1895, and with Cyrillic makers mark N. ALEKSEEV and 84 silver standard. The verso covered in the original velvet backing. 12.25 inches x 10.5 inches (31 x 27 cm).
