A LARGE AND IMPRESSIVE RUSSIAN ICON OF THE KAZAN MOTHER OF GOD, FREDERIC FABER, ST. PETERSBURG, 1843. Finely painted and in an excellent state of preservation. The Virgin’s maphorion with ornate gilt and simulated jewel edging. The infant Christ’s robe overall decorated with gilt embroidery. The lower margin inscribed in Old Church Slavonic, "The representation of the wonder-working image of the Virgin Mary of Kazan, our most pure mistress the Mother of God as in the City of Kazan." Overlaid with a magnificent, highly ornate heavy silver repousse and chased riza with attached gilded silver figurative haloes and further embellished with paste stones. Hallmarked St. Petersburg, dated 1843 and with Cyrillic makers mark ФФ for Frederic Faber, and 84 silver standard. Weight of silver riza alone 62.5 troy oz. 28.25 inches x 21 inches (71.7 x 53.4 cm).
