A FINE RUSSIAN ICON OF THE BEHEADING OF ST. JOHN THE FORERUNNER, MSTERA, 19TH CENTURY. In this ornate and complex rendering, John is seen at the left being taken from prison to be executed. At lower center he is beheaded and at the lower right his head is presented to Salome who will return with his head to the court, depicted as a castle-like structure behind her. At upper left an angel descends to comfort John while in prison and at top center is Lord Sabaoth in clouds. The interior border (kovcheg) decorated with gilt scrolling foliage. The upper margin with an ornate condensed Slavonic title that that identifies the subject as The Cutting Off Of The Head of John The Forerunner. 14 inches x 12.25 inches (35.8 x 31.3 cm).
