A RUSSIAN ICON OF THE CRUCIFIXION, 19TH CENTURY.  At center the crucified Christ hangs on the cross. At lower left are depicted the three Marys and on the lower right the Apostle St. John and the Roman Centurion Longinus. In the background the good thief (left) and the bad thief (right) and further back still, the city walls of Jerusalem. Two angels of the Lord descend to bring comfort to Christ. In the upper left corner the sun which has darkened and upper right the moon that has become as blood (Joel 2:31, Acts 2:20). At the lower central section is the head (skull) of Adam. 17.5 inches x 15.75 inches (44.5 x 40 cm).
