Lot 228
A VERY FINE RUSSIAN ICON OF THE THEODORE MOTHER OF GOD, MOSCOW, CIRCA 1913. A finely painted icon reminiscent of examples from a variety of popular Moscow icon workshops including Gurianov’s. Considering the subject, which is the patroness of the House of Romanov, it is likely the offered icon was executed to correspond with the Tercentenary of 1913. The borders painted with an interesting selection of various saints including: The Holy Hieromartyr Stephen of Surozh, The Holy Patriarchs of Constantinople, Alexander, John and Paul. The Holy Martyr John the Warrior, The Holy Germogen Patriarch of Moscow (canonized – glorified, in 1913), The Holy Bishop Ambrose, The Venerable Nephont, and Saints Julita and Kirik. 12.25 inches x 10.5 inches (31.1 x 26.5 cm).
