AN INTERESTING OLD BELIEVERS RUSSIAN ICON OF THE JOY TO ALL WHO SORROW MOTHER OF GOD, 1874. At center the Mother of God within an aureole holding the infant Christ and a scepter and flanked by Saints Catherine (left) and Barbara (right). On the upper margin within an arched reserve the Lord Sabaoth amidst highly stylized clouds and a dove below. The borders painted with Saints Antipas, Kharlampiy, Theodore, Pantelimeon, Mary of Egypt and Agrapia. The verso inscribed and dated 1874. The central lower margin inscribed with the kontakion, tone 6, for this icon: "We have no other help, we have no other hope but you, Mistress -- aid us. We hope in you and praise you, for we are your servants; let us not be confounded." 15.75 inches x 13.5 inches (40 x 33.5 cm).
