AN IMPRESSIVE RUSSIAN ICON OF THE ONLY BEGOTTEN SON AND WORD OF GOD, 19TH CENTURY. This complex icon illustrates the second antiphon of the Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom. God the Father is at top. Below is Immanuel supported by angels. Lower left Christ, robed as a warrior king, is victoriously seated atop the cross as an angel vanquishes evil beneath him. At lower right Death rides out of a dark cave on a lion, trampling bodies. 17.5 inches x 14.75 inches (44.5 x 37.5 cm).
