Mr. David J. Schneider (1912-1971) received in February of 1954, thence by descent to the present owner, Mr. Douglas J. Schneider Jr., his son.
The offered lot was presented as a First Place Trophy to noted horse trainer and owner Mr. David Jack “D.J.” Schneider for winning the 1954 McLennan Handicap, Hialeah Park Racetrack in Hialeah, Florida (see photo below). A native New Yorker, Schneider grew up near the famous Aqueduct Racetrack in Queens where as a young boy he began walking hots. Between frequent visits to the racetrack, Schneider earned a living as a jewelry salesman. However in 1938 all that would change. With horse racing resolutely in his blood, Schneider worked tirelessly to acquire a small stake in a three year old maiden named Idle Sun which went on to win about a dozen races and put Schneider firmly in the game. In 1940, Schneider obtained his trainer's license and went on to become a successful trainer/owner until his untimely death at the age of 59 in the year 1971.
The McLennan Handicap was an American thoroughbred horse race run annually each February from 1934-1961 at Hialeah Park Racetrack in Hialeah, Florida. First run in 1934 as the Joseph McLennan Memorial Handicap, the race was named in honor of the late Joseph "Sandy" McLennan, the former racing secretary at Hialeah Park and at Chicago's Arlington Park who died in December 1933. According to the consignor, “My father was told the actual trophy cup (the offered lot) had once belonged to Joseph “Sandy” McLennan and for years was displayed in his office at Arlington Park in Chicago."
