A RUSSIAN ICON OF THE KORSUN MOTHER OF GOD, CIRCA 1800.  A finely painted image of this Umilenie (Tenderness) type so called because of the tender cheek to cheek embrace of Mother and child. The original is said to have been brought by the Great Prince Vladimir from Korsun (Kherson) on the Black Sea to Kiev in 988. The upper left corner with the Greek abbreviation for the title given her at the Council of Ephesus (421 C.E.) as Mother of God abbreviated her as Meter Theou. Finely painted on a gold leaf ground and in an excellent state of preservation. The borders painted with Vasili and Elena (Helen). 12 inches x 10.25 inches (30.5 x 26 cm).
