A RUSSIAN ICON OF THE O VSEPYETAYA MATI, CIRCA 1800.  Unlike the typical three stars found on the head and shoulders of the Mary representing her perpetual virginity before, during and after the Incarnation, on this type they are replaced with faces within circular medallions. They are seen by some as angels, as stars in the Book of Enoch, while others view them as the Trinity. Her head covering is edged with a band inscribed with Kontakion Thirteen from the Akathist Canon which begins, "O All-Hymned Mother (O Vsepyetaya Mati) bearer of the holiest of holies…"13 inches x10.75 inches (33 x 27 cm).
