AN EXTREMLY FINE FRENCH NAPOLEAN III DIEPPE CARVED IVORY MANTLE CLOCK, 19TH CENTURY. The rectangular case overlaid completely on four sides with overlapping carved leaf work and figural elements comprising winged putto, grotesque facial masks, crowned seahorses and armorial lions, with circular clock dial centered between two carved and layered armorial crests each above an inscribed ribbon "POUR Y. PARVENIR" (strive to attain) and raised on a sloped carved ivory plinth with carved ivory lions' paw feet. Height 23.75 inches (60.5 cm).

This Dieppe motif comprising carved layers of leaves with classical figures and armorial crests was utilized in numerous utilitarian forms including chairs, case furniture, and more commonly, wall mirrors.
