A LARGE AND VERY FINE RUSSIAN ICON OF THE HOLY PROTOMARTYR AND DEACON STEPHEN, 19TH CENTURY. Finely and naturalistically painted, here Stephen, the first Christian Martyr, is depicted in the vestments of a deacon, his office as described in the book of Acts. He holds the implement of his martyrdom-a rock and in the background the city walls of Jerusalem. Verso of icon with vintage Russian inscription of the name Hjalmar Armfelt. One wonders of course whether this name and/or icon is related to the famous Fabergé workmaster Karl Gustaf Hjalmar Armfelt. Contained in its original glazed shadow box frame -kiot. The icon 21 inches x 15.25 inches (53.4 x 38.5 cm), overall including kiot 26 inches x 20 inches (66 x 52 cm).
