Lot 359
A FINE AND UNIQUE RUSSIAN ICON OF ECCE HOMO, 19TH CENTURY. A finely painted icon of a typically Catholic subject, no doubt inspired by an Italian model, probably after Francesco Solimena and inscribed in Russian at top center Ve Chelivek- a transliteration of the Latin expression "Behold the Man". Such finely painted icons were often the product of commissions inspired by wealthy Russian visits to the West and in particular, Italy, which was fashionable among the aristocracy in the 19th century. Contained in an appropriately styled later gilt frame. 21.25 inches x 17.25 inches (54 x 43.8 cm).
Estimate:  $750 - 1,000
Price Realized: $1,125.00
