A VERY FINE SIGNED AND DATED RUSSIAN ICON OF ST. JOHN THE FORERUNNER AND ST. NICHOLAS, TRINITY SERGIEV LAVRA STUDIO OF IVAN MALYSHEV, 1854. At top center, Christ in the heavens delivering a blessing and holding an open book of gospels inscribed with the text of Matthew 11:28. Below on the left Saint John the Forerunner (Baptist) looking upward towards Christ in an attitude of supplication and holding an open scroll inscribed in Old Slavonic which begins, "I saw and witnessed concerning him, behold the Lamb of God, which takes away the sins of the world…" On the right Saint Nicholas holds a book of Gospels with ornately decorated cover. The borders finely painted with The Holy Martyr John the New, The Holy Venerable Nicholas Svyatosh, The Holy Martyr Alexandra and the Holy Martyr Anatoli. Finely painted with miniature detail. The lower central border inscribed in Slavonic within a rectangular cartouche, "This icon was painted in the Sergiev Lavra, in the school of icon painting, under the direction of Head Master Ivan Malyshev, in the year 1854." The entire icon overlaid with a silver-gilt and repoussé riza hallmarked Moscow, dated 1854, with indistinguishable Cyrillic makers mark and 84 silver standard. 12.25 inches x 10.5 inches (31 x 26.5 cm).
