The source of this iconographical image originated in a vision said to have been seen by Russian soldiers near the town of Avgust/August in what is now Eastern Poland, not long after the beginning of the 1st World War. Before a battle with the Germans on what was then the Russian Northwestern Front, they saw the Mother of God standing in the night sky on the 7th to 8th of September, with her son on her left arm, and her right hand pointing to the West inspiring them to kneel before the vision. The report of the apparition greatly encouraged the troops and led to painted icons of this subject that began appearing in 1915.
