Lot 88
A FINE RUSSIAN ICON OF THE ENTRANCE OF THE MOTHER OF GOD INTO THE TEMPLE, CIRCA 1900. Here the three year old Mary is presented by her parents Joakhim and Anna to the Temple priest Zakharias, father of John the Forerunner (Baptist), and behind them a gathering of candle-bearing virgins. This icon clearly draws on examples from the 16th and 17th century, styles which had great appeal with the revival of ancient iconography that blossomed at the end of the 19th century and continued up until the revolution. A finely painted specimen. 12.25 inches x 10.25 inches (31.1 x 26.1 cm).
