A LARGE RUSSIAN ICON OF SAINT NICHOLAS OF MOZHAISK, 19TH CENTURY. This type originated in a miracle that is said to have occurred when Tartars attacked the city of Mozhaisk. Here he is shown with a sword in his outstretched right hand while his left hand holds a walled fortress symbolic of the city of Mozhaisk. On the upper left within a roundel Christ presents Nicholas with the Gospels and on the upper right the Mother of God presents him with his bishop stole. The inscription on upper margin reads, The Holy Nicholas Wonderworker. 21 inches x 17.5 inches (53.3 x 44.2 cm).
