A LARGE AND COMPLEX RUSSIAN ICON OF THE POKROV MOTHER OF GOD, 19TH CENTURY. This subject combines the two events which occurred in Constantinople in the year 911 A.D. At top center beneath an image of Christ, the Mother of God stretches her mantle (Pokrov-Russian) over the church and is surrounded by a gathering of angels and saints. Below at center Romanos the Melodist is flanked by the Patriarch Tarasos and the Emperor Leo (left) and Empress Zoe at right. To the immediate right of Romanos are the Holy Fool Andre and his disciple Epiphany. A colorful and finely painted icon with exceptional detail throughout. 42.5 inches x 27.25 inches (108 x 69.5 cm).
