Lot 95
A LARGE AND IMPRESSIVE CHURCH ICON OF THE ENTRANCE OF THE MOTHER OF GOD INTO THE TEMPLE, MSTERA, CIRCA 1890.  Here the parents of Mary, Joakhim and Anna present their daughter to the Temple priest Zakharias, father of John the Forerunner (Baptist). Behind the young Mary are virgin and angels assenting. In the distant background Anna is seen seated alone as an angel descends towards her, prefiguring the birth of the Virgin. The borders are painted with nine family saints including the Bishop Saint Paul, St. Emilian, St. Kosmas, St. Mary of Egypt, the Apostle Paul, the Venerable Theodora, the Holy Martyr Tatiana, the Holy Great Martyr Ekaterina and the Holy Martyr Vassa. The large size and shape of the offered icon would suggest it was once displayed in the festival tier of an iconostasis. 56 inches x 20.5 inches (142 x 52 cm).
Estimate:  $6,000 - 9,000
Price Realized: $10,625.00
