A PAIR OF SILVER AND NIELLO RUSSIAN SNUFF BOXES, MOSCOW 1845-1890. The first comprising a large box with rounded sides and overall nielloed with scrolling vines on a stippled ground. The underside with medallion cartouche engraved in Arabic, and the hinged lid nielloed with the scene of the Moscow Kremlin. Hallmarked Moscow, circa 1880, Cyrillic maker's mark PA, and 84 silver standard. Length 3.9 inches (10 cm). The second incurvate of rectangular form with rounded sides, the sides nielloed with acanthus leaves, the verso with circular reserve nielloed with a cityscape, and the hinged lid nielloed with a view of the Palace Square with the Alexander Column, St. Petersburg. Hallmarked Moscow, dated 1845, indistinguishable maker's mark, 84 silver standard. Length 3.25 inches (8.4 cm).
